Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom said migrants sheltered in the school gym was only a temporary stay and the Administration had plans in process to relocate the migrants.

Although there are news reports that the citizen’s protests are the reason Migrants are moved out of the school gym, Williams-Isom said the protests had nothing to do with the Administration’s decision to remove the Migrants. The Administration had no intention of using the school gym for long-term shelter.

67,000, Asylum Seekers

“Officials have scouted 500 new locations citywide that could potentially house migrants, from vacant office space, shuttered schools, empty churches, and even space on Rikers Island.”

“However, Mayor Eric Adams said hotels in the city are at capacity or unwilling to help. City officials say the state and federal governments haven’t stepped in to help, nor have neighboring counties.”

“In the last year, New York City has provided shelter and care for more than 67,000 asylum seekers and migrants. Currently, the city is looking after more than 41,500 migrants.

“Last week alone, 4,200 migrants came in on buses and planes, with 900 arriving in a single day.”
