Francis Scott Key

A story of how U.S. National Anthem came to be.”

September 14, 1814
American soldiers raised a large flag over the fort to celebrate their victory, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write a poem called “Defence of Fort M’Henry”. The flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, became known as the Star-Spangled Banner.”

Later the poem was published as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and became a popular patriotic song. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson adopted it as the de facto national anthem.

Although all verses are considered part of the anthem, it’s customary to only sing the first verse. Some believe this may be because some people thought the song was too militaristic for daily use, or because it was more practical.

The Star-Spangled Banner is the United States national anthem, and its history began with the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812:

Star Spangled Banner

American History: “September 13, 1814
British warships bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor for 25 hours, in an attack known as the Battle of Baltimore.”

“On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the United States national anthem.”
